Tanzania T-bill auction, 8 October 2025: 364-day at 5.61%, down 38 bps

At the Treasury bill auction dated 8 October 2025, the Bank of Tanzania cleared the 91-day bill at 6.53% (down 28 basis points), the 182-day bill at 6.81% (up 25 basis points) and the 364-day bill at 5.61% (down 38 basis points). The rate shown is the weighted average yield of successful bids.

Demand was strong: bids totalled TZS 141.4bn against TZS 79.8bn on offer, 177% of the amount sought, and TZS 59.9bn was accepted.

At 5.61%, the 364-day rate is the lowest in the 21 auctions of the past year.

A year earlier the 364-day bill cleared at 10.98%, so the government is paying 537 basis points less than twelve months ago.

Put TZS 1,000,000 into the 364-day bill at this auction and you get back TZS 1,056,088 after 12 months: TZS 56,088 in interest before any withholding tax, about TZS 4,674 a month.

That is TZS 3,777 less than the same money would have earned at the previous auction.

For shorter money: TZS 34,072 on the 182-day bill (6 months), TZS 16,315 on the 91-day bill (3 months).

The government pays the full amount at maturity; the risk is Tanzania’s government not paying, and the money is locked until then.
