Tanzania T-bill auction, 12 July 2017: 364-day at 9.32%, up 50 bps

At the Treasury bill auction dated 12 July 2017, the Bank of Tanzania cleared the 91-day bill at 4.92% (down 61 basis points), the 182-day bill at 8.15% (up 126 basis points) and the 364-day bill at 9.32% (up 50 basis points). The rate shown is the weighted average yield of successful bids.

The auction was fully subscribed: bids totalled TZS 228.4bn against TZS 170.3bn on offer, 134% of the amount sought, and TZS 172.3bn was accepted.

Over the past year the 364-day rate has ranged from 8.49% to 16.33%.

A year earlier the 364-day bill cleared at 15.68%, so the government is paying 636 basis points less than twelve months ago.

TZS 93,228 in 12 months on the 364-day bill

Put TZS 1,000,000 into the 364-day bill at this auction and you get back TZS 1,093,228 after 12 months: TZS 93,228 in interest before any withholding tax, about TZS 7,769 a month.

That is TZS 5,022 more than the same money would have earned at the previous auction.

For shorter money: TZS 40,754 on the 182-day bill (6 months), TZS 12,308 on the 91-day bill (3 months).

The government pays the full amount at maturity; the risk is Tanzania’s government not paying, and the money is locked until then.
