Tanzania T-bill auction, 22 February 2017: 364-day at 15.30%, down 45 bps

At the Treasury bill auction dated 22 February 2017, the Bank of Tanzania cleared the 91-day bill at 7.01% (down 9 basis points), the 182-day bill at 14.11% (down 31 basis points) and the 364-day bill at 15.30% (down 45 basis points). The rate shown is the weighted average yield of successful bids.

Demand was strong: bids totalled TZS 430.3bn against TZS 138.5bn on offer, 311% of the amount sought, and TZS 223.1bn was accepted.

Over the past year the 364-day rate has ranged from 15.07% to 18.34%.

A year earlier the 364-day bill cleared at 18.97%, so the government is paying 367 basis points less than twelve months ago.

Put TZS 1,000,000 into the 364-day bill at this auction and you get back TZS 1,152,976 after 12 months: TZS 152,976 in interest before any withholding tax, about TZS 12,748 a month.

That is TZS 4,478 less than the same money would have earned at the previous auction.

For shorter money: TZS 70,535 on the 182-day bill (6 months), TZS 17,534 on the 91-day bill (3 months).

The government pays the full amount at maturity; the risk is Tanzania’s government not paying, and the money is locked until then.
