Tanzania T-bill auction, 26 February 2014: 364-day at 13.77%, down 13 bps
At the Treasury bill auction dated 26 February 2014, the Bank of Tanzania cleared the 91-day bill at 13.26% (down 41 basis points), the 182-day bill at 13.70% (down 2 basis points) and the 364-day bill at 13.77% (down 13 basis points). The rate shown is the weighted average yield of successful bids.
Demand was strong: bids totalled TZS 481.0bn against TZS 130.0bn on offer, 370% of the amount sought, and TZS 181.1bn was accepted.
Over the past year the 364-day rate has ranged from 13.64% to 15.97%.
A year earlier the 364-day bill cleared at 14.15%, so the government is paying 38 basis points less than twelve months ago.

Put TZS 1,000,000 into the 364-day bill at this auction and you get back TZS 1,137,700 after 12 months: TZS 137,700 in interest before any withholding tax, about TZS 11,475 a month.
That is TZS 1,278 less than the same money would have earned at the previous auction.
