Egypt T-bill auction, 19 March 2024: 364-day at 30.14%, down 216 bps
At the Treasury bill auction dated 19 March 2024, the Central Bank of Egypt cleared the 91-day bill at 27.83% (down 238 basis points), the 182-day bill at 29.91% (down 193 basis points) and the 364-day bill at 30.14% (down 216 basis points). The rate shown is the weighted average yield of accepted bids.
Demand was strong: bids totalled EGP 688.5bn against EGP 85.0bn on offer, 810% of the amount sought, and EGP 289.6bn was accepted.
Over the past year the 364-day rate has ranged from 22.55% to 32.30%.
A year earlier the 364-day bill cleared at 22.58%, so the government is paying 756 basis points more than twelve months ago.

Put EGP 100,000 into the 364-day bill at this auction and you get back EGP 130,141 after 12 months: EGP 30,141 in interest before any withholding tax, about EGP 2,512 a month.

For shorter money: EGP 14,956 on the 182-day bill (6 months), EGP 6,957 on the 91-day bill (3 months).
The government pays the full amount at maturity; the risk is Egypt’s government not paying, and the money is locked until then.
