Egypt T-bill auction, 2 February 2021: 364-day at 13.31%, up 32 bps
At the Treasury bill auction dated 2 February 2021, the Central Bank of Egypt cleared the 91-day bill at 12.84% (up 16 basis points), the 182-day bill at 13.19% (up 29 basis points) and the 364-day bill at 13.31% (up 32 basis points). The rate shown is the weighted average yield of accepted bids.
Demand was strong: bids totalled EGP 53.5bn against EGP 25.0bn on offer, 214% of the amount sought, and EGP 27.9bn was accepted.
Over the past year the 364-day rate has ranged from 12.24% to 14.71%.
A year earlier the 364-day bill cleared at 14.16%, so the government is paying 85 basis points less than twelve months ago.

Put EGP 100,000 into the 364-day bill at this auction and you get back EGP 113,312 after 12 months: EGP 13,312 in interest before any withholding tax, about EGP 1,109 a month.

For shorter money: EGP 6,593 on the 182-day bill (6 months), EGP 3,210 on the 91-day bill (3 months).
The government pays the full amount at maturity; the risk is Egypt’s government not paying, and the money is locked until then.
