Egypt T-bill auction, 21 February 2017: 364-day at 18.98%, up 126 bps
At the Treasury bill auction dated 21 February 2017, the Central Bank of Egypt cleared the 91-day bill at 18.49% (up 144 basis points), the 182-day bill at 18.83% (up 110 basis points) and the 364-day bill at 18.98% (up 126 basis points). The rate shown is the weighted average yield of accepted bids.
Demand was strong: bids totalled EGP 35.2bn against EGP 17.5bn on offer, 201% of the amount sought, and EGP 17.5bn was accepted.
Over the past year the 364-day rate has ranged from 13.91% to 20.19%.
A year earlier the 364-day bill cleared at 12.13%, so the government is paying 685 basis points more than twelve months ago.

The government pays the full amount at maturity; the risk is Egypt’s government not paying, and the money is locked until then.
