Egypt T-bill auction, 14 February 2017: 364-day at 17.73%, down 187 bps
At the Treasury bill auction dated 14 February 2017, the Central Bank of Egypt cleared the 91-day bill at 17.05% (down 157 basis points), the 182-day bill at 17.73% (down 195 basis points) and the 364-day bill at 17.73% (down 187 basis points). The rate shown is the weighted average yield of accepted bids.
Demand was strong: bids totalled EGP 58.9bn against EGP 16.8bn on offer, 352% of the amount sought, and EGP 19.3bn was accepted.
Over the past year the 364-day rate has ranged from 13.91% to 20.19%.
A year earlier the 364-day bill cleared at 11.94%, so the government is paying 579 basis points more than twelve months ago.

Put EGP 100,000 into the 364-day bill at this auction and you get back EGP 117,725 after 12 months: EGP 17,725 in interest before any withholding tax, about EGP 1,477 a month.
That is EGP 1,868 less than the same money would have earned at the previous auction.
For shorter money: EGP 8,863 on the 182-day bill (6 months), EGP 4,263 on the 91-day bill (3 months).
The government pays the full amount at maturity; the risk is Egypt’s government not paying, and the money is locked until then.
