Egypt T-bill auction, 28 February 2017: 364-day at 19.81%, up 83 bps
At the Treasury bill auction dated 28 February 2017, the Central Bank of Egypt cleared the 91-day bill at 19.09% (up 60 basis points), the 182-day bill at 19.83% (up 100 basis points) and the 364-day bill at 19.81% (up 83 basis points). The rate shown is the weighted average yield of accepted bids.
Demand was strong: bids totalled EGP 38.6bn against EGP 16.8bn on offer, 230% of the amount sought, and EGP 16.8bn was accepted.
Over the past year the 364-day rate has ranged from 13.91% to 20.19%.
A year earlier the 364-day bill cleared at 12.13%, so the government is paying 768 basis points more than twelve months ago.

For shorter money: EGP 9,913 on the 182-day bill (6 months), EGP 4,774 on the 91-day bill (3 months).
The government pays the full amount at maturity; the risk is Egypt’s government not paying, and the money is locked until then.
