Egypt T-bill auction, 22 July 2014: 364-day at 11.13%, down 3 bps
At the Treasury bill auction dated 22 July 2014, the Central Bank of Egypt cleared the 91-day bill at 11.83% (up 105 basis points), the 182-day bill at 10.95% (down 3 basis points) and the 364-day bill at 11.13% (down 3 basis points). The rate shown is the weighted average yield of accepted bids.
Demand was strong: bids totalled EGP 17.6bn against EGP 8.5bn on offer, 208% of the amount sought, and EGP 8.5bn was accepted.
Over the past year the 364-day rate has ranged from 10.54% to 13.82%.
A year earlier the 364-day bill cleared at 14.31%, so the government is paying 318 basis points less than twelve months ago.

Put EGP 100,000 into the 364-day bill at this auction and you get back EGP 111,133 after 12 months: EGP 11,133 in interest before any withholding tax, about EGP 928 a month.

For shorter money: EGP 5,476 on the 182-day bill (6 months), EGP 2,957 on the 91-day bill (3 months).
The government pays the full amount at maturity; the risk is Egypt’s government not paying, and the money is locked until then.
