Egypt T-bill auction, 22 March 2011: 364-day at 12.46%, up 5 bps
At the Treasury bill auction dated 22 March 2011, the Central Bank of Egypt cleared the 91-day bill at 11.35% (down 11 basis points), the 182-day bill at 12.08% (down 1 basis point) and the 364-day bill at 12.46% (up 5 basis points). The rate shown is the weighted average yield of accepted bids.
Demand was strong: bids totalled EGP 14.7bn against EGP 7.5bn on offer, 196% of the amount sought, and EGP 7.5bn was accepted.
Over the past year the 364-day rate has ranged from 10.25% to 12.52%.
A year earlier the 364-day bill cleared at 10.37%, so the government is paying 209 basis points more than twelve months ago.

Put EGP 100,000 into the 364-day bill at this auction and you get back EGP 112,459 after 12 months: EGP 12,459 in interest before any withholding tax, about EGP 1,038 a month.

For shorter money: EGP 6,041 on the 182-day bill (6 months), EGP 2,837 on the 91-day bill (3 months).
The government pays the full amount at maturity; the risk is Egypt’s government not paying, and the money is locked until then.
