Egypt T-bill auction, 15 March 2011: 364-day at 12.41%, down 11 bps
At the Treasury bill auction dated 15 March 2011, the Central Bank of Egypt cleared the 91-day bill at 11.46% (down 3 basis points), the 182-day bill at 12.09% (unchanged) and the 364-day bill at 12.41% (down 11 basis points). The rate shown is the weighted average yield of accepted bids.
Demand was strong: bids totalled EGP 11.8bn against EGP 6.5bn on offer, 181% of the amount sought, and EGP 6.0bn was accepted.
Over the past year the 364-day rate has ranged from 10.25% to 12.52%.
A year earlier the 364-day bill cleared at 10.56%, so the government is paying 184 basis points more than twelve months ago.

Put EGP 100,000 into the 364-day bill at this auction and you get back EGP 112,409 after 12 months: EGP 12,409 in interest before any withholding tax, about EGP 1,034 a month.
That is EGP 112 less than the same money would have earned at the previous auction.
For shorter money: EGP 6,045 on the 182-day bill (6 months), EGP 2,864 on the 91-day bill (3 months).
The government pays the full amount at maturity; the risk is Egypt’s government not paying, and the money is locked until then.
