Egypt T-bill auction, 29 March 2011: 364-day at 12.39%, down 6 bps
At the Treasury bill auction dated 29 March 2011, the Central Bank of Egypt cleared the 91-day bill at 11.20% (down 15 basis points), the 182-day bill at 11.99% (down 9 basis points) and the 364-day bill at 12.39% (down 6 basis points). The rate shown is the weighted average yield of accepted bids.
Demand was strong: bids totalled EGP 15.4bn against EGP 7.5bn on offer, 205% of the amount sought, and EGP 7.5bn was accepted.
Over the past year the 364-day rate has ranged from 10.25% to 12.52%.
A year earlier the 364-day bill cleared at 10.31%, so the government is paying 208 basis points more than twelve months ago.

Put EGP 100,000 into the 364-day bill at this auction and you get back EGP 112,395 after 12 months: EGP 12,395 in interest before any withholding tax, about EGP 1,033 a month.
That is EGP 64 less than the same money would have earned at the previous auction.
For shorter money: EGP 5,997 on the 182-day bill (6 months), EGP 2,800 on the 91-day bill (3 months).
The government pays the full amount at maturity; the risk is Egypt’s government not paying, and the money is locked until then.
