Egypt T-bill auction, 12 October 2010: 364-day at 10.25%, down 36 bps
At the Treasury bill auction dated 12 October 2010, the Central Bank of Egypt cleared the 91-day bill at 8.92% (down 23 basis points), the 182-day bill at 9.56% (down 21 basis points) and the 364-day bill at 10.25% (down 36 basis points). The rate shown is the weighted average yield of accepted bids.
Demand was strong: bids totalled EGP 19.2bn against EGP 7.5bn on offer, 256% of the amount sought, and EGP 7.5bn was accepted.
Over the past year the 364-day rate has ranged from 10.24% to 11.66%.
A year earlier the 364-day bill cleared at 9.81%, so the government is paying 44 basis points more than twelve months ago.

Put EGP 100,000 into the 364-day bill at this auction and you get back EGP 110,253 after 12 months: EGP 10,253 in interest before any withholding tax, about EGP 854 a month.

For shorter money: EGP 4,778 on the 182-day bill (6 months), EGP 2,229 on the 91-day bill (3 months).
The government pays the full amount at maturity; the risk is Egypt’s government not paying, and the money is locked until then.
