Egypt T-bill auction, 27 July 2010: 364-day at 10.83%, down 4 bps
At the Treasury bill auction dated 27 July 2010, the Central Bank of Egypt cleared the 91-day bill at 10.16% (up 1 basis point), the 182-day bill at 10.46% (down 4 basis points) and the 364-day bill at 10.83% (down 4 basis points). The rate shown is the weighted average yield of accepted bids.
Demand was strong: bids totalled EGP 16.2bn against EGP 7.0bn on offer, 231% of the amount sought, and EGP 7.0bn was accepted.
Over the past year the 364-day rate has ranged from 9.72% to 11.66%.
A year earlier the 364-day bill cleared at 10.37%, so the government is paying 46 basis points more than twelve months ago.

Put EGP 100,000 into the 364-day bill at this auction and you get back EGP 110,827 after 12 months: EGP 10,827 in interest before any withholding tax, about EGP 902 a month.

The government pays the full amount at maturity; the risk is Egypt’s government not paying, and the money is locked until then.
