Egypt T-bill auction, 20 July 2010: 364-day at 10.86%, up 3 bps

At the Treasury bill auction dated 20 July 2010, the Central Bank of Egypt cleared the 91-day bill at 10.15% (down 2 basis points), the 182-day bill at 10.50% (unchanged) and the 364-day bill at 10.86% (up 3 basis points). The rate shown is the weighted average yield of accepted bids.

Demand was strong: bids totalled EGP 15.1bn against EGP 6.0bn on offer, 252% of the amount sought, and EGP 6.0bn was accepted.

Over the past year the 364-day rate has ranged from 9.72% to 11.66%.

A year earlier the 364-day bill cleared at 10.37%, so the government is paying 49 basis points more than twelve months ago.

Put EGP 100,000 into the 364-day bill at this auction and you get back EGP 110,862 after 12 months: EGP 10,862 in interest before any withholding tax, about EGP 905 a month.

That is EGP 26 more than the same money would have earned at the previous auction.

For shorter money: EGP 5,250 on the 182-day bill (6 months), EGP 2,537 on the 91-day bill (3 months).

The government pays the full amount at maturity; the risk is Egypt’s government not paying, and the money is locked until then.
