Egypt T-bill auction, 25 August 2009: 364-day at 9.82%, down 3 bps

At the Treasury bill auction dated 25 August 2009, the Central Bank of Egypt cleared the 364-day bill at 9.82% (down 3 basis points). The rate shown is the weighted average yield of accepted bids.

Demand was strong: bids totalled EGP 7.5bn against EGP 3.0bn on offer, 249% of the amount sought, and EGP 3.0bn was accepted.

At 9.82%, the 364-day rate is the lowest in the 37 auctions of the past year.

A year earlier the 364-day bill cleared at 12.41%, so the government is paying 259 basis points less than twelve months ago.

The government pays the full amount at maturity; the risk is Egypt’s government not paying, and the money is locked until then.
