Egypt T-bill auction, 11 March 2008: 364-day at 6.34%, down 16 bps
At the Treasury bill auction dated 11 March 2008, the Central Bank of Egypt cleared the 91-day bill at 4.91% (down 20 basis points), the 182-day bill at 5.30% (down 18 basis points) and the 364-day bill at 6.34% (down 16 basis points). The rate shown is the weighted average yield of accepted bids.
Demand was strong: bids totalled EGP 9.0bn against EGP 3.5bn on offer, 256% of the amount sought, and EGP 3.5bn was accepted.
Over the past year the 364-day rate has ranged from 5.62% to 9.00%.
A year earlier the 364-day bill cleared at 8.77%, so the government is paying 243 basis points less than twelve months ago.

Put EGP 100,000 into the 364-day bill at this auction and you get back EGP 106,340 after 12 months: EGP 6,340 in interest before any withholding tax, about EGP 528 a month.

For shorter money: EGP 2,650 on the 182-day bill (6 months), EGP 1,227 on the 91-day bill (3 months).
The government pays the full amount at maturity; the risk is Egypt’s government not paying, and the money is locked until then.
