Egypt T-bill auction, 4 March 2008: 364-day at 6.50%, down 27 bps
At the Treasury bill auction dated 4 March 2008, the Central Bank of Egypt cleared the 91-day bill at 5.10% (down 15 basis points), the 182-day bill at 5.48% (down 31 basis points) and the 364-day bill at 6.50% (down 27 basis points). The rate shown is the weighted average yield of accepted bids.
Demand was strong: bids totalled EGP 9.6bn against EGP 3.5bn on offer, 275% of the amount sought, and EGP 3.5bn was accepted.
Over the past year the 364-day rate has ranged from 5.62% to 9.00%.
A year earlier the 364-day bill cleared at 8.75%, so the government is paying 225 basis points less than twelve months ago.

Put EGP 100,000 into the 364-day bill at this auction and you get back EGP 106,502 after 12 months: EGP 6,502 in interest before any withholding tax, about EGP 542 a month.
That is EGP 266 less than the same money would have earned at the previous auction.
For shorter money: EGP 2,740 on the 182-day bill (6 months), EGP 1,276 on the 91-day bill (3 months).
The government pays the full amount at maturity; the risk is Egypt’s government not paying, and the money is locked until then.
