Egypt T-bill auction, 29 May 2007: 364-day at 8.37%, down 1 bps
At the Treasury bill auction dated 29 May 2007, the Central Bank of Egypt cleared the 91-day bill at 7.12% (unchanged), the 182-day bill at 7.49% (up 10 basis points) and the 364-day bill at 8.37% (down 1 basis point). The rate shown is the weighted average yield of accepted bids.
Demand was strong: bids totalled EGP 7.0bn against EGP 2.0bn on offer, 350% of the amount sought, and EGP 2.0bn was accepted.
Over the past year the 364-day rate has ranged from 7.74% to 10.21%.
A year earlier the 364-day bill cleared at 8.79%, so the government is paying 41 basis points less than twelve months ago.

Put EGP 100,000 into the 364-day bill at this auction and you get back EGP 108,372 after 12 months: EGP 8,372 in interest before any withholding tax, about EGP 698 a month.

For shorter money: EGP 3,744 on the 182-day bill (6 months), EGP 1,780 on the 91-day bill (3 months).
The government pays the full amount at maturity; the risk is Egypt’s government not paying, and the money is locked until then.
