Egypt T-bill auction, 22 May 2007: 364-day at 8.39%, up 65 bps
At the Treasury bill auction dated 22 May 2007, the Central Bank of Egypt cleared the 91-day bill at 7.12% (up 22 basis points) and the 364-day bill at 8.39% (up 65 basis points). The rate shown is the weighted average yield of accepted bids.
Demand was strong: bids totalled EGP 5.6bn against EGP 2.5bn on offer, 223% of the amount sought, and EGP 2.5bn was accepted.
Over the past year the 364-day rate has ranged from 7.74% to 10.21%.
A year earlier the 364-day bill cleared at 8.79%, so the government is paying 40 basis points less than twelve months ago.

Put EGP 100,000 into the 364-day bill at this auction and you get back EGP 108,386 after 12 months: EGP 8,386 in interest before any withholding tax, about EGP 699 a month.

The government pays the full amount at maturity; the risk is Egypt’s government not paying, and the money is locked until then.
