Egypt T-bill auction, 22 February 2005: 364-day at 9.53%, down 14 bps

At the Treasury bill auction dated 22 February 2005, the Central Bank of Egypt cleared the 182-day bill at 9.11% (down 3 basis points) and the 364-day bill at 9.53% (down 14 basis points). The rate shown is the weighted average yield of accepted bids.

Demand was strong: bids totalled EGP 3.4bn against EGP 1.5bn on offer, 229% of the amount sought, and EGP 1.5bn was accepted.

At 9.53%, the 364-day rate is the lowest in the 23 auctions of the past year.

Put EGP 100,000 into the 364-day bill at this auction and you get back EGP 109,525 after 12 months: EGP 9,525 in interest before any withholding tax, about EGP 794 a month.

That is EGP 136 less than the same money would have earned at the previous auction.

For shorter money: EGP 4,556 on the 182-day bill (6 months).

The government pays the full amount at maturity; the risk is Egypt’s government not paying, and the money is locked until then.
