Egypt T-bill auction, 6 April 2004: 364-day at 10.47%

At the Treasury bill auction dated 6 April 2004, the Central Bank of Egypt cleared the 91-day bill at 8.50% (up 60 basis points), the 182-day bill at 9.20% (up 50 basis points) and the 364-day bill at 10.47%. The rate shown is the weighted average yield of accepted bids.

The auction was fully subscribed: bids totalled EGP 6.3bn against EGP 6.1bn on offer, 104% of the amount sought, and EGP 4.0bn was accepted.

Put EGP 100,000 into the 364-day bill at this auction and you get back EGP 110,470 after 12 months: EGP 10,470 in interest before any withholding tax, about EGP 873 a month.

For shorter money: EGP 4,598 on the 182-day bill (6 months), EGP 2,124 on the 91-day bill (3 months).

The government pays the full amount at maturity; the risk is Egypt’s government not paying, and the money is locked until then.
