Tanzania T-bill auction, 14 June 2017: 364-day at 8.49%, down 141 bps

At the Treasury bill auction dated 14 June 2017, the Bank of Tanzania cleared the 91-day bill at 5.53% (down 70 basis points), the 182-day bill at 7.36% (down 159 basis points) and the 364-day bill at 8.49% (down 141 basis points). The rate shown is the weighted average yield of successful bids.

Demand was strong: bids totalled TZS 534.5bn against TZS 138.0bn on offer, 387% of the amount sought, and TZS 142.0bn was accepted.

At 8.49%, the 364-day rate is the lowest in the 26 auctions of the past year.

A year earlier the 364-day bill cleared at 15.07%, so the government is paying 658 basis points less than twelve months ago.

Put TZS 1,000,000 into the 364-day bill at this auction and you get back TZS 1,084,888 after 12 months: TZS 84,888 in interest before any withholding tax, about TZS 7,074 a month.

That is TZS 14,107 less than the same money would have earned at the previous auction.

For shorter money: TZS 36,808 on the 182-day bill (6 months), TZS 13,833 on the 91-day bill (3 months).

The government pays the full amount at maturity; the risk is Tanzania’s government not paying, and the money is locked until then.
