Tanzania T-bill auction, 10 February 2016: 364-day at 18.97%, up 17 bps

At the Treasury bill auction dated 10 February 2016, the Bank of Tanzania cleared the 91-day bill at 8.63% (down 21 basis points), the 182-day bill at 17.79% (up 12 basis points) and the 364-day bill at 18.97% (up 17 basis points). The rate shown is the weighted average yield of successful bids.

Demand was strong: bids totalled TZS 219.8bn against TZS 132.0bn on offer, 167% of the amount sought, and TZS 177.0bn was accepted.

At 18.97%, the 364-day rate is the highest in the 26 auctions of the past year.

A year earlier the 364-day bill cleared at 14.17%, so the government is paying 480 basis points more than twelve months ago.

Put TZS 1,000,000 into the 364-day bill at this auction and you get back TZS 1,189,723 after 12 months: TZS 189,723 in interest before any withholding tax, about TZS 15,810 a month.

That is TZS 1,693 more than the same money would have earned at the previous auction.

For shorter money: TZS 88,935 on the 182-day bill (6 months), TZS 21,575 on the 91-day bill (3 months).

The government pays the full amount at maturity; the risk is Tanzania’s government not paying, and the money is locked until then.
