Mozambique T-bill auction, 23 March 2016: 364-day at 11.10%, up 40 bps

At the Treasury bill auction dated 23 March 2016, the Banco de Moçambique cleared the 182-day bill at 10.99% (up 18 basis points) and the 364-day bill at 11.10% (up 40 basis points). The rate shown is the weighted average subscription rate.

The auction was undersubscribed: bids totalled MZN 2.6bn against MZN 5.0bn on offer, 53% of the amount sought, and MZN 1.8bn was accepted.

At 11.10%, the 364-day rate is the highest in the 4 auctions of the past year.

Put MZN 100,000 into the 364-day bill at this auction and you get back MZN 111,100 after 12 months: MZN 11,100 in interest before any withholding tax, about MZN 925 a month.

The government pays the full amount at maturity; the risk is Mozambique’s government not paying, and the money is locked until then.
