Egypt T-bill auction, 24 September 2024: 364-day at 26.22%, down 2 bps
At the Treasury bill auction dated 24 September 2024, the Central Bank of Egypt cleared the 91-day bill at 29.60% (down 12 basis points), the 182-day bill at 29.21% (down 3 basis points) and the 364-day bill at 26.22% (down 2 basis points). The rate shown is the weighted average yield of accepted bids.
Demand was strong: bids totalled EGP 236.4bn against EGP 95.0bn on offer, 249% of the amount sought, and EGP 112.6bn was accepted.
Over the past year the 364-day rate has ranged from 25.75% to 32.30%.
A year earlier the 364-day bill cleared at 25.73%, so the government is paying 49 basis points more than twelve months ago.

Put EGP 100,000 into the 364-day bill at this auction and you get back EGP 126,221 after 12 months: EGP 26,221 in interest before any withholding tax, about EGP 2,185 a month.
That is EGP 20 less than the same money would have earned at the previous auction.
For shorter money: EGP 14,605 on the 182-day bill (6 months), EGP 7,400 on the 91-day bill (3 months).
The government pays the full amount at maturity; the risk is Egypt’s government not paying, and the money is locked until then.
