Egypt T-bill auction, 14 May 2024: 364-day at 25.98%, up 1 bps

At the Treasury bill auction dated 14 May 2024, the Central Bank of Egypt cleared the 91-day bill at 25.97% (unchanged), the 182-day bill at 25.97% (down 2 basis points) and the 364-day bill at 25.98% (up 1 basis point). The rate shown is the weighted average yield of accepted bids.

Demand was strong: bids totalled EGP 142.2bn against EGP 80.0bn on offer, 178% of the amount sought, and EGP 98.0bn was accepted.

Over the past year the 364-day rate has ranged from 23.47% to 32.30%.

A year earlier the 364-day bill cleared at 23.58%, so the government is paying 240 basis points more than twelve months ago.

Put EGP 100,000 into the 364-day bill at this auction and you get back EGP 125,979 after 12 months: EGP 25,979 in interest before any withholding tax, about EGP 2,165 a month.

That is EGP 8 more than the same money would have earned at the previous auction.

For shorter money: EGP 12,987 on the 182-day bill (6 months), EGP 6,492 on the 91-day bill (3 months).

The government pays the full amount at maturity; the risk is Egypt’s government not paying, and the money is locked until then.
