Egypt T-bill auction, 13 April 2021: 364-day at 13.38%, up 2 bps
At the Treasury bill auction dated 13 April 2021, the Central Bank of Egypt cleared the 91-day bill at 13.11% (down 2 basis points), the 182-day bill at 13.40% (up 1 basis point) and the 364-day bill at 13.38% (up 2 basis points). The rate shown is the weighted average yield of accepted bids.
Demand was strong: bids totalled EGP 61.4bn against EGP 27.5bn on offer, 223% of the amount sought, and EGP 32.1bn was accepted.
Over the past year the 364-day rate has ranged from 12.31% to 13.84%.
A year earlier the 364-day bill cleared at 12.97%, so the government is paying 42 basis points more than twelve months ago.

Put EGP 100,000 into the 364-day bill at this auction and you get back EGP 113,384 after 12 months: EGP 13,384 in interest before any withholding tax, about EGP 1,115 a month.
That is EGP 16 more than the same money would have earned at the previous auction.
For shorter money: EGP 6,702 on the 182-day bill (6 months), EGP 3,279 on the 91-day bill (3 months).
The government pays the full amount at maturity; the risk is Egypt’s government not paying, and the money is locked until then.
