Egypt T-bill auction, 28 April 2020: 364-day at 12.46%, up 15 bps

At the Treasury bill auction dated 28 April 2020, the Central Bank of Egypt cleared the 91-day bill at 12.44% (up 13 basis points), the 182-day bill at 12.44% (up 17 basis points) and the 364-day bill at 12.46% (up 15 basis points). The rate shown is the weighted average yield of accepted bids.

Demand was strong: bids totalled EGP 46.7bn against EGP 29.0bn on offer, 161% of the amount sought, and EGP 23.9bn was accepted.

Over the past year the 364-day rate has ranged from 12.24% to 17.50%.

A year earlier the 364-day bill cleared at 17.02%, so the government is paying 456 basis points less than twelve months ago.

Put EGP 100,000 into the 364-day bill at this auction and you get back EGP 112,461 after 12 months: EGP 12,461 in interest before any withholding tax, about EGP 1,038 a month.

That is EGP 154 more than the same money would have earned at the previous auction.

For shorter money: EGP 6,219 on the 182-day bill (6 months), EGP 3,110 on the 91-day bill (3 months).

The government pays the full amount at maturity; the risk is Egypt’s government not paying, and the money is locked until then.
