Egypt T-bill auction, 3 March 2020: 364-day at 14.09%, up 44 bps
At the Treasury bill auction dated 3 March 2020, the Central Bank of Egypt cleared the 91-day bill at 12.98% (down 18 basis points), the 182-day bill at 14.33% (up 52 basis points) and the 364-day bill at 14.09% (up 44 basis points). The rate shown is the weighted average yield of accepted bids.
Demand was strong: bids totalled EGP 37.8bn against EGP 24.5bn on offer, 154% of the amount sought, and EGP 11.7bn was accepted.
Over the past year the 364-day rate has ranged from 13.64% to 17.61%.
A year earlier the 364-day bill cleared at 17.10%, so the government is paying 302 basis points less than twelve months ago.

Put EGP 100,000 into the 364-day bill at this auction and you get back EGP 114,086 after 12 months: EGP 14,086 in interest before any withholding tax, about EGP 1,174 a month.
That is EGP 444 more than the same money would have earned at the previous auction.
For shorter money: EGP 7,165 on the 182-day bill (6 months), EGP 3,245 on the 91-day bill (3 months).
The government pays the full amount at maturity; the risk is Egypt’s government not paying, and the money is locked until then.
