Egypt T-bill auction, 25 February 2020: 364-day at 13.64%, down 22 bps
At the Treasury bill auction dated 25 February 2020, the Central Bank of Egypt cleared the 182-day bill at 13.81% (down 29 basis points) and the 364-day bill at 13.64% (down 22 basis points). The rate shown is the weighted average yield of accepted bids.
Demand was strong: bids totalled EGP 42.6bn against EGP 20.5bn on offer, 208% of the amount sought, and EGP 20.5bn was accepted.
At 13.64%, the 364-day rate is the lowest in the 52 auctions of the past year.
A year earlier the 364-day bill cleared at 18.18%, so the government is paying 454 basis points less than twelve months ago.

Put EGP 100,000 into the 364-day bill at this auction and you get back EGP 113,642 after 12 months: EGP 13,642 in interest before any withholding tax, about EGP 1,137 a month.

The government pays the full amount at maturity; the risk is Egypt’s government not paying, and the money is locked until then.
