Egypt T-bill auction, 12 February 2019: 364-day at 18.20%, up 7 bps
At the Treasury bill auction dated 12 February 2019, the Central Bank of Egypt cleared the 91-day bill at 18.20% (up 7 basis points), the 182-day bill at 18.53% (up 17 basis points) and the 364-day bill at 18.20% (up 7 basis points). The rate shown is the weighted average yield of accepted bids.
The auction was fully subscribed: bids totalled EGP 37.5bn against EGP 26.5bn on offer, 141% of the amount sought, and EGP 19.6bn was accepted.
Over the past year the 364-day rate has ranged from 16.55% to 19.98%.
A year earlier the 364-day bill cleared at 16.68%, so the government is paying 152 basis points more than twelve months ago.

Put EGP 100,000 into the 364-day bill at this auction and you get back EGP 118,200 after 12 months: EGP 18,200 in interest before any withholding tax, about EGP 1,517 a month.
That is EGP 67 more than the same money would have earned at the previous auction.
For shorter money: EGP 9,265 on the 182-day bill (6 months), EGP 4,551 on the 91-day bill (3 months).
The government pays the full amount at maturity; the risk is Egypt’s government not paying, and the money is locked until then.
