Egypt T-bill auction, 5 February 2019: 364-day at 18.13%, down 27 bps
At the Treasury bill auction dated 5 February 2019, the Central Bank of Egypt cleared the 91-day bill at 18.13% (up 2 basis points), the 182-day bill at 18.36% (down 8 basis points) and the 364-day bill at 18.13% (down 27 basis points). The rate shown is the weighted average yield of accepted bids.
Demand was strong: bids totalled EGP 51.0bn against EGP 26.5bn on offer, 192% of the amount sought, and EGP 26.2bn was accepted.
Over the past year the 364-day rate has ranged from 16.43% to 19.98%.
A year earlier the 364-day bill cleared at 17.11%, so the government is paying 102 basis points more than twelve months ago.

Put EGP 100,000 into the 364-day bill at this auction and you get back EGP 118,133 after 12 months: EGP 18,133 in interest before any withholding tax, about EGP 1,511 a month.
That is EGP 271 less than the same money would have earned at the previous auction.
For shorter money: EGP 9,181 on the 182-day bill (6 months), EGP 4,533 on the 91-day bill (3 months).
The government pays the full amount at maturity; the risk is Egypt’s government not paying, and the money is locked until then.
