Egypt T-bill auction, 10 July 2018: 364-day at 19.44%, up 33 bps
At the Treasury bill auction dated 10 July 2018, the Central Bank of Egypt cleared the 91-day bill at 19.69% (up 16 basis points), the 182-day bill at 19.79% (up 23 basis points) and the 364-day bill at 19.44% (up 33 basis points). The rate shown is the weighted average yield of accepted bids.
Demand was strong: bids totalled EGP 51.7bn against EGP 25.8bn on offer, 201% of the amount sought, and EGP 24.6bn was accepted.
Over the past year the 364-day rate has ranged from 16.43% to 21.99%.
A year earlier the 364-day bill cleared at 21.05%, so the government is paying 160 basis points less than twelve months ago.

Put EGP 100,000 into the 364-day bill at this auction and you get back EGP 119,444 after 12 months: EGP 19,444 in interest before any withholding tax, about EGP 1,620 a month.
That is EGP 331 more than the same money would have earned at the previous auction.
For shorter money: EGP 9,893 on the 182-day bill (6 months), EGP 4,923 on the 91-day bill (3 months).
The government pays the full amount at maturity; the risk is Egypt’s government not paying, and the money is locked until then.
