Egypt T-bill auction, 13 March 2018: 364-day at 16.59%, down 31 bps

At the Treasury bill auction dated 13 March 2018, the Central Bank of Egypt cleared the 91-day bill at 17.89% (down 10 basis points), the 182-day bill at 17.75% (down 16 basis points) and the 364-day bill at 16.59% (down 31 basis points). The rate shown is the weighted average yield of accepted bids.

Demand was strong: bids totalled EGP 60.2bn against EGP 22.8bn on offer, 265% of the amount sought, and EGP 30.4bn was accepted.

Over the past year the 364-day rate has ranged from 16.43% to 21.99%.

A year earlier the 364-day bill cleared at 19.92%, so the government is paying 334 basis points less than twelve months ago.

Put EGP 100,000 into the 364-day bill at this auction and you get back EGP 116,587 after 12 months: EGP 16,587 in interest before any withholding tax, about EGP 1,382 a month.

That is EGP 307 less than the same money would have earned at the previous auction.

For shorter money: EGP 8,876 on the 182-day bill (6 months), EGP 4,472 on the 91-day bill (3 months).

The government pays the full amount at maturity; the risk is Egypt’s government not paying, and the money is locked until then.
