Egypt T-bill auction, 27 February 2018: 364-day at 16.83%, up 21 bps

At the Treasury bill auction dated 27 February 2018, the Central Bank of Egypt cleared the 91-day bill at 17.99% (up 24 basis points), the 182-day bill at 17.71% (up 25 basis points) and the 364-day bill at 16.83% (up 21 basis points). The rate shown is the weighted average yield of accepted bids.

Demand was strong: bids totalled EGP 43.3bn against EGP 23.5bn on offer, 184% of the amount sought, and EGP 21.4bn was accepted.

Over the past year the 364-day rate has ranged from 16.43% to 21.99%.

A year earlier the 364-day bill cleared at 18.98%, so the government is paying 216 basis points less than twelve months ago.

Put EGP 100,000 into the 364-day bill at this auction and you get back EGP 116,826 after 12 months: EGP 16,826 in interest before any withholding tax, about EGP 1,402 a month.

That is EGP 208 more than the same money would have earned at the previous auction.

For shorter money: EGP 8,855 on the 182-day bill (6 months), EGP 4,497 on the 91-day bill (3 months).

The government pays the full amount at maturity; the risk is Egypt’s government not paying, and the money is locked until then.
