Egypt T-bill auction, 7 November 2017: 364-day at 17.65%, down 4 bps

At the Treasury bill auction dated 7 November 2017, the Central Bank of Egypt cleared the 91-day bill at 18.39% (down 18 basis points), the 182-day bill at 18.47% (down 23 basis points) and the 364-day bill at 17.65% (down 4 basis points). The rate shown is the weighted average yield of accepted bids.

Demand was strong: bids totalled EGP 48.2bn against EGP 20.5bn on offer, 235% of the amount sought, and EGP 29.9bn was accepted.

Over the past year the 364-day rate has ranged from 17.61% to 21.99%.

A year earlier the 364-day bill cleared at 16.84%, so the government is paying 80 basis points more than twelve months ago.

Put EGP 100,000 into the 364-day bill at this auction and you get back EGP 117,646 after 12 months: EGP 17,646 in interest before any withholding tax, about EGP 1,471 a month.

That is EGP 44 less than the same money would have earned at the previous auction.

For shorter money: EGP 9,234 on the 182-day bill (6 months), EGP 4,597 on the 91-day bill (3 months).

The government pays the full amount at maturity; the risk is Egypt’s government not paying, and the money is locked until then.
