Egypt T-bill auction, 22 August 2017: 364-day at 19.31%, up 60 bps

At the Treasury bill auction dated 22 August 2017, the Central Bank of Egypt cleared the 91-day bill at 19.06% (down 2 basis points), the 182-day bill at 19.37% (up 54 basis points) and the 364-day bill at 19.31% (up 60 basis points). The rate shown is the weighted average yield of accepted bids.

Demand was strong: bids totalled EGP 45.1bn against EGP 20.8bn on offer, 218% of the amount sought, and EGP 25.3bn was accepted.

Over the past year the 364-day rate has ranged from 16.07% to 21.99%.

A year earlier the 364-day bill cleared at 15.91%, so the government is paying 339 basis points more than twelve months ago.

Put EGP 100,000 into the 364-day bill at this auction and you get back EGP 119,308 after 12 months: EGP 19,308 in interest before any withholding tax, about EGP 1,609 a month.

That is EGP 603 more than the same money would have earned at the previous auction.

For shorter money: EGP 9,684 on the 182-day bill (6 months), EGP 4,765 on the 91-day bill (3 months).

The government pays the full amount at maturity; the risk is Egypt’s government not paying, and the money is locked until then.
