Egypt T-bill auction, 13 September 2016: 364-day at 16.11%, down 14 bps
At the Treasury bill auction dated 13 September 2016, the Central Bank of Egypt cleared the 91-day bill at 14.91% (up 43 basis points), the 182-day bill at 15.61% (down 13 basis points) and the 364-day bill at 16.11% (down 14 basis points). The rate shown is the weighted average yield of accepted bids.
The auction was fully subscribed: bids totalled EGP 24.8bn against EGP 17.5bn on offer, 141% of the amount sought, and EGP 17.5bn was accepted.
Over the past year the 364-day rate has ranged from 12.13% to 16.25%.
A year earlier the 364-day bill cleared at 11.94%, so the government is paying 417 basis points more than twelve months ago.

Put EGP 100,000 into the 364-day bill at this auction and you get back EGP 116,105 after 12 months: EGP 16,105 in interest before any withholding tax, about EGP 1,342 a month.
That is EGP 144 less than the same money would have earned at the previous auction.
For shorter money: EGP 7,803 on the 182-day bill (6 months), EGP 3,727 on the 91-day bill (3 months).
The government pays the full amount at maturity; the risk is Egypt’s government not paying, and the money is locked until then.
