Egypt T-bill auction, 30 August 2016: 364-day at 16.07%, up 11 bps
At the Treasury bill auction dated 30 August 2016, the Central Bank of Egypt cleared the 91-day bill at 14.03% (down 1 basis point), the 182-day bill at 15.57% (up 8 basis points) and the 364-day bill at 16.07% (up 11 basis points). The rate shown is the weighted average yield of accepted bids.
Demand was strong: bids totalled EGP 24.7bn against EGP 15.5bn on offer, 159% of the amount sought, and EGP 15.5bn was accepted.
At 16.07%, the 364-day rate is the highest in the 23 auctions of the past year.
A year earlier the 364-day bill cleared at 11.94%, so the government is paying 413 basis points more than twelve months ago.

The government pays the full amount at maturity; the risk is Egypt’s government not paying, and the money is locked until then.
