Egypt T-bill auction, 7 June 2016: 364-day at 14.03%, up 13 bps
At the Treasury bill auction dated 7 June 2016, the Central Bank of Egypt cleared the 91-day bill at 12.96% (up 10 basis points), the 182-day bill at 13.82% (up 3 basis points) and the 364-day bill at 14.03% (up 13 basis points). The rate shown is the weighted average yield of accepted bids.
Demand was strong: bids totalled EGP 31.4bn against EGP 14.0bn on offer, 225% of the amount sought, and EGP 14.0bn was accepted.
Over the past year the 364-day rate has ranged from 12.13% to 14.41%.
A year earlier the 364-day bill cleared at 11.94%, so the government is paying 210 basis points more than twelve months ago.

Put EGP 100,000 into the 364-day bill at this auction and you get back EGP 114,034 after 12 months: EGP 14,034 in interest before any withholding tax, about EGP 1,170 a month.

For shorter money: EGP 6,910 on the 182-day bill (6 months), EGP 3,239 on the 91-day bill (3 months).
The government pays the full amount at maturity; the risk is Egypt’s government not paying, and the money is locked until then.
