Egypt T-bill auction, 12 August 2014: 364-day at 12.41%, down 6 bps
At the Treasury bill auction dated 12 August 2014, the Central Bank of Egypt cleared the 91-day bill at 11.70% (down 24 basis points), the 182-day bill at 12.12% (down 11 basis points) and the 364-day bill at 12.41% (down 6 basis points). The rate shown is the weighted average yield of accepted bids.
Demand was strong: bids totalled EGP 27.2bn against EGP 9.5bn on offer, 286% of the amount sought, and EGP 9.5bn was accepted.
Over the past year the 364-day rate has ranged from 10.54% to 12.92%.
A year earlier the 364-day bill cleared at 13.33%, so the government is paying 92 basis points less than twelve months ago.

Put EGP 100,000 into the 364-day bill at this auction and you get back EGP 112,411 after 12 months: EGP 12,411 in interest before any withholding tax, about EGP 1,034 a month.

For shorter money: EGP 6,061 on the 182-day bill (6 months), EGP 2,924 on the 91-day bill (3 months).
The government pays the full amount at maturity; the risk is Egypt’s government not paying, and the money is locked until then.
