Egypt T-bill auction, 11 March 2014: 364-day at 10.84%, up 10 bps
At the Treasury bill auction dated 11 March 2014, the Central Bank of Egypt cleared the 91-day bill at 10.27% (up 6 basis points), the 182-day bill at 10.67% (up 11 basis points) and the 364-day bill at 10.84% (up 10 basis points). The rate shown is the weighted average yield of accepted bids.
Demand was strong: bids totalled EGP 22.2bn against EGP 8.5bn on offer, 261% of the amount sought, and EGP 8.5bn was accepted.
Over the past year the 364-day rate has ranged from 10.54% to 15.41%.
A year earlier the 364-day bill cleared at 13.97%, so the government is paying 313 basis points less than twelve months ago.

Put EGP 100,000 into the 364-day bill at this auction and you get back EGP 110,837 after 12 months: EGP 10,837 in interest before any withholding tax, about EGP 903 a month.

For shorter money: EGP 5,337 on the 182-day bill (6 months), EGP 2,567 on the 91-day bill (3 months).
The government pays the full amount at maturity; the risk is Egypt’s government not paying, and the money is locked until then.
