Egypt T-bill auction, 6 November 2012: 364-day at 13.15%, up 6 bps
At the Treasury bill auction dated 6 November 2012, the Central Bank of Egypt cleared the 91-day bill at 12.44% (up 2 basis points), the 182-day bill at 12.90% (up 9 basis points) and the 364-day bill at 13.15% (up 6 basis points). The rate shown is the weighted average yield of accepted bids.
Demand was strong: bids totalled EGP 14.9bn against EGP 7.0bn on offer, 213% of the amount sought, and EGP 6.9bn was accepted.
Over the past year the 364-day rate has ranged from 13.09% to 15.97%.
A year earlier the 364-day bill cleared at 13.85%, so the government is paying 70 basis points less than twelve months ago.

Put EGP 100,000 into the 364-day bill at this auction and you get back EGP 113,150 after 12 months: EGP 13,150 in interest before any withholding tax, about EGP 1,096 a month.
That is EGP 62 more than the same money would have earned at the previous auction.
For shorter money: EGP 6,452 on the 182-day bill (6 months), EGP 3,110 on the 91-day bill (3 months).
The government pays the full amount at maturity; the risk is Egypt’s government not paying, and the money is locked until then.
