Egypt T-bill auction, 10 July 2012: 364-day at 15.87%, down 7 bps
At the Treasury bill auction dated 10 July 2012, the Central Bank of Egypt cleared the 91-day bill at 14.50% (down 26 basis points), the 182-day bill at 15.42% (down 11 basis points) and the 364-day bill at 15.87% (down 7 basis points). The rate shown is the weighted average yield of accepted bids.
Demand was strong: bids totalled EGP 20.2bn against EGP 8.5bn on offer, 238% of the amount sought, and EGP 8.5bn was accepted.
Over the past year the 364-day rate has ranged from 12.78% to 15.97%.
A year earlier the 364-day bill cleared at 12.98%, so the government is paying 289 basis points more than twelve months ago.

Put EGP 100,000 into the 364-day bill at this auction and you get back EGP 115,871 after 12 months: EGP 15,871 in interest before any withholding tax, about EGP 1,323 a month.

For shorter money: EGP 7,710 on the 182-day bill (6 months), EGP 3,625 on the 91-day bill (3 months).
The government pays the full amount at maturity; the risk is Egypt’s government not paying, and the money is locked until then.
