Egypt T-bill auction, 7 February 2012: 364-day at 15.91%, up 4 bps
At the Treasury bill auction dated 7 February 2012, the Central Bank of Egypt cleared the 182-day bill at 14.89% (down 3 basis points) and the 364-day bill at 15.91% (up 4 basis points). The rate shown is the weighted average yield of accepted bids.
Demand was strong: bids totalled EGP 9.8bn against EGP 6.5bn on offer, 151% of the amount sought, and EGP 4.0bn was accepted.
At 15.91%, the 364-day rate is the highest in the 49 auctions of the past year.
A year earlier the 364-day bill cleared at 10.59%, so the government is paying 532 basis points more than twelve months ago.

The government pays the full amount at maturity; the risk is Egypt’s government not paying, and the money is locked until then.
