Egypt T-bill auction, 18 October 2011: 364-day at 13.72%, unchanged
At the Treasury bill auction dated 18 October 2011, the Central Bank of Egypt cleared the 91-day bill at 12.43% (down 18 basis points), the 182-day bill at 13.10% (down 5 basis points) and the 364-day bill at 13.72% (unchanged). The rate shown is the weighted average yield of accepted bids.
Demand was strong: bids totalled EGP 18.9bn against EGP 7.5bn on offer, 252% of the amount sought, and EGP 7.5bn was accepted.
Over the past year the 364-day rate has ranged from 10.34% to 13.88%.
A year earlier the 364-day bill cleared at 10.25%, so the government is paying 347 basis points more than twelve months ago.

Put EGP 100,000 into the 364-day bill at this auction and you get back EGP 113,720 after 12 months: EGP 13,720 in interest before any withholding tax, about EGP 1,143 a month.

For shorter money: EGP 6,548 on the 182-day bill (6 months), EGP 3,108 on the 91-day bill (3 months).
The government pays the full amount at maturity; the risk is Egypt’s government not paying, and the money is locked until then.
