Egypt T-bill auction, 31 May 2011: 364-day at 12.95%, up 1 bps
At the Treasury bill auction dated 31 May 2011, the Central Bank of Egypt cleared the 91-day bill at 11.56% (down 5 basis points), the 182-day bill at 12.59% (down 2 basis points) and the 364-day bill at 12.95% (up 1 basis point). The rate shown is the weighted average yield of accepted bids.
Demand was strong: bids totalled EGP 14.5bn against EGP 8.0bn on offer, 182% of the amount sought, and EGP 8.3bn was accepted.
At 12.95%, the 364-day rate is the highest in the 43 auctions of the past year.
A year earlier the 364-day bill cleared at 10.57%, so the government is paying 238 basis points more than twelve months ago.

The government pays the full amount at maturity; the risk is Egypt’s government not paying, and the money is locked until then.
