Egypt T-bill auction, 7 December 2010: 364-day at 10.47%, up 4 bps
At the Treasury bill auction dated 7 December 2010, the Central Bank of Egypt cleared the 91-day bill at 9.03% (up 35 basis points), the 182-day bill at 9.89% (up 8 basis points) and the 364-day bill at 10.47% (up 4 basis points). The rate shown is the weighted average yield of accepted bids.
Demand was strong: bids totalled EGP 16.3bn against EGP 7.0bn on offer, 233% of the amount sought, and EGP 5.5bn was accepted.
Over the past year the 364-day rate has ranged from 10.25% to 11.66%.
A year earlier the 364-day bill cleared at 11.37%, so the government is paying 90 basis points less than twelve months ago.

Put EGP 100,000 into the 364-day bill at this auction and you get back EGP 110,471 after 12 months: EGP 10,471 in interest before any withholding tax, about EGP 873 a month.

For shorter money: EGP 4,946 on the 182-day bill (6 months), EGP 2,258 on the 91-day bill (3 months).
The government pays the full amount at maturity; the risk is Egypt’s government not paying, and the money is locked until then.
